Manchester's Wilmslow Road is acknowledged as a haven for curry fans everywhere, boasts an abundance of history and tradition. Nowhere more so than at the much loved Sanam Sweet House and Restaurant, renowned for attracting customers from all around the world.
Established by Haji Abdul Ghafoor at 145-151 on the famous curry mile road back in 1969, Sanam's has grown in stature through the years, always moving up that extra gear amid continued competition from other outlets in the Rusholme area. Sanam's ability to remain at the top of the tree in such a competitive environment speaks volumes for the restaurants quality service and tasty dishes, which make the Sanam experience, a memory that so many people treasure. That's why they all keep going back for more. Mr Ghafoor like many inspiring immigrants who set up in business and brought a new range of cuisine into Britain's mainstream food menu.
After moving to England alone, Mr Ghafoor's necessity to look after himself soon revealed a fascinating flair for cooking and in 1962 he opened his first establishment, Cafe Shezan on Clowes Street. Mr Ghafoor's obvious eye for business, matched with his culinary skills were soon there for all to see and he opened his first restaurant in 1964, the Multan.
Mr Ghafoor's association with Wilmslow Road then began in 1969 when Cafe Sanam was launched and then finally, in 1975, he opened the now world famous Sanam Sweet House and Restaurant, both the oldest and largest restaurant on Wilmslow Road. Mr Ghafoor's son and Sanam's manager, Abdul Qayuum, told us: "We have followed my father's business philosophy of working hard and giving the customer good quality halal food and attentive service, we aim to continue with these ethics that have served us so well".
The menu has changed through the years, but held on to popular curry dishes like chicken tikka masala, whilst also moving on and integrating influences from Middle Eastern and Chinese cuisine, as well as more unusual Indian choices, like chicken makhani. Sanam's also has a 300 plus capacity banqueting hall that caters for wedding and Eid parties.
Sanam's function room is ideally suited for any large event, including business meetings and presentations.
Sanam is also one of the UK's premier sweet makers, where all sweets are carefully made using pure butter. Sanam's offer the original Wimslow Road experience. It's an intimate set up, with reliable service, in a great environment. That's why they continue to lead the way on the "curry mile".
